Volunteer Day at Harvest Hills
Harvest Hills Animal Shelter will be hosting a Volunteer Day at the shelter facility on 1389 Bridgton Road (Rt. 302), Fryeburg, ME. The open house at the facility will be held on Sunday, November 4, 2007, from 1 pm to 3 pm.
Please join us to learn about our facility. The shelter is in dire need of volunteers to help in several ways, including general and animal cage cleaning from 7:30 am to 10 am daily. We also need help between 10 am and closing time with dog-walking our canine residents or to pat our feline friends. We will also be looking for volunteers to help with the never ending outdoor work such as fence repairs and maintenance, gardening, raking, lawn mowing, and snow blowing. Indoor painting needs to be done and whatever else we can all think of to make Harvest Hills a better temporary dwelling for our four-legged friends.
The 9 Lives Thrift Shop, whose proceeds go directly to support the animals at Harvest Hills, needs additional help picking up furniture; sorting and pricing donations; putting donations in the shop; keeping the rooms organized; and cleaning up.
If you can lend any time at all to help Harvest Hills Animal Shelter or 9 Lives Thrift Shop, please stop by on November 4th and get to know the people working there and the animals living there.
If you have any questions, Harvest Hills Animal Shelter can be reached at 207-935-4358. More information about Harvest Hills Animal Shelter can be found at their website, www.harvesthills.org, or by emailing at hhas@fairpoint.net.
Online Auction for Claws and Paws
The Companion Animal Protection society (CAPS) is conducting an online auction called the Claws and Paws Shop between November 5th and November 30th, 2007. The purpose of the auction is to raise money and awareness for CAPS’ critical work on behalf of pet shop and puppy mill animals. To participate in the auction, held through cMarket, we ask that you log on to the auction website at www.caps.cmarket.com. We also ask you to join and register with our online community through the CAPS website, www.caps-web.org, in order to receive updates and notifications before and during the auction.
The Companion Animal Protection Society is the only national nonprofit dedicated exclusively to protecting companion animals. In 1989, when Deborah Howard noticed the cramped, unsanitary conditions at the Docktor Pet Center, she became enraged. The company had more than 300 franchises at that time. Ms. Howard joined forces with Robert Baker, the foremost puppy mill investigator in the country. These investigative efforts generated two ABC “20/20” exposes and articles in both People and Life Magazine. These exposes took on the pet shop industry, naming Docktor directly, and showed the horrors of puppy mills. As a result of their efforts, Docktor Pet Centers, who refused to do business without the sale of puppies, filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in February 1992, the same year CAPS was founded. CAPS continues to actively address this issue through investigations, education, media relations, legislative involvement, puppy mill dog rescues, consumer assistance, and pet shop employee relations.
